Grant Experience and Opportunities
This grant has been one of the biggest blessings of my life. As a college student struggling financially, this grant has opened doors for me that I never thought would be possible. Financials aside, I have learned a great deal about rural healthcare and what it means to be a nurse in this setting. Growing up in rural healthcare, it is all I have ever known. This grant has given me the opportunity to learn about the resources that rural healthcare is lacking in contrast to healthcare in more populated areas. This has provided me with a deeper respect for the quality, service, and care that we provide to our patients with the limited resources that we are provided. Baptist Memorial Hospital- Union City is the hospital that I have had the pleasure of working for as a Nurse Intern I. Here I have had first hand experience on what it is like in rural healthcare. We have had the opportunity to observe many different departments within the hospital, clinical and non-clinical. These observation experiences have given me a greater understanding of how the hospital works outside of nursing, and for this, I am grateful. The modules taught us all about virtual healthcare, rural healthcare, cultural sensitivity and humility, and health policy. This is training that we may have gotten in the clinical setting, but the medallions go into greater detail, expanding our knowledge on the topics even further. I also thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the UTHSC in Memphis to learn more about telehealth, the mobile health unit, visit the CHIPS center, and participate in the poverty simulation. Overall, I am very thankful for the Rural Health Scholarship, the UTHSC, Baptist Memorial Hospital- Union City, and everyone else that is involved in this grant. I could never fully express the gratitude I have for everything that this amazing opportunity has done for me and the knowledge and experience it has provided me.
