A. Personal Statement

   For the proposed application, I will serve as Primary-Investigator. I have been a clinician, researcher, and educator working with diverse populations. In my role as clinician I regularly provide care for underserved populations. My specialty in pediatrics has placed me in settings that provide care for underserved populations as patients came from rural and urban setting for the highest level of care. The focus of my research is with underserved populations. As an educator since 1999, I have taught and continue to teach in underserved areas with diverse populations. Orlando, Florida, where I completed my doctorate and was faculty at Adventist University, has a very diverse population. Memphis, Tennessee, where I am currently appointed, is ethnically and socio-economically diverse. Diversity is essential to nursing to reflect the population served. Diversity is accomplished by enhancing opportunities for diverse individuals to be accepted and complete their selected nursing program. It is necessary to enhance the pipeline for diversity in nursing to effect diversity in all aspects of nursing including as faculty.  These challenges can be addressed by the funding provided through the Nursing Workforce Diversity (NDW) Program. My experiences will enhance the NDW Program by providing understanding of the needs of the underserved and underrepresented populations in nursing.

Pediatric critical care. A vulnerable population includes both the very young and the very ill. My research has focused on this population and the care delivery within the critical care setting for children. Specifically, I focused on ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) development and interventions in the pediatric population that could be used to reduce the incidence of VAP.

My dissertation evaluated an educational intervention on one component of the adult bundle for prevention of VAP, the head-of-bed elevation. This intervention included studying the effects of endotracheal tube cuff pressure measurement and possible risks for aspiration.
