Karen Chandler Johnson, MD, MPH
Dr. Karen Johnson is board certified in Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine and has a Master’s of Public Health. For the past 30 years, her work has centered on large-scale interventional and observational studies of adults in the areas of obesity, smoking cessation and substance abuse, and women’s health, as well as risk factors associated with chronic disease and aging including diabetes and hypertension. She has an extensive history of conducting behavior change clinical trials including weight loss and smoking cessation trials as the Principal Investigator. Dr. Johnson is the PI of a newly NCI funded grant to leverage technology to address obesity to prevent cancer called CHAMPS. She is an MPI on a grant to examine the causes of bone loss during weight loss in the Look AHEAD study.She was the PI of the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial (SPRINT) in Memphis and Vice Chair of the National SPRINT Steering Committee funded by the NHLBI. Dr. Johnson was also the PI of the Look AHEAD weight loss study funded by NIDDK and the PI for the TARGIT smoking cessation and weight loss study using interactive technology funded by NHLBI that is part of the EARLY cooperative group.She has been the PI of the Women’s Health Initiative in Memphis where we studied the effect of diet modification on breast cancer risk and have served on the National WHI Executive Committee, she continues as a Co-Investigator. She is a Co-Investigator on the SMART trial which is testing the effects of contingency management and behavioral Economics on treatment adherence in Opioid Use Disorder. She has been course director for the Randomized Clinical Trials Course in the Masters of Epidemiology degree program and actively mentor in clinical research methods.
