2023 Williford DVP
The William N. Williford Distinguished Visiting Professorship (DVP) was established at UTHSC in 1997. This annual lecture in the Department of Ophthalmology focuses on recent updates and improvements in the field to educate both faculty and trainees, as well as foster the advancement of the delivery of healthcare to improve patient outcomes.
A native of Tennessee, Dr. Williford was born and raised in Knoxville. He received his undergraduate degree cum laude from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Serving in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1965, he was discharged at the rank of captain, and prior to enrolling in medical school, he was an administrative officer in the Division of Medicine at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, as well as a management intern at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Williford received his medical degree from UT Memphis, where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed an internship at Baptist Memorial Hospital and an ophthalmology residency at UT Memphis. A highly experienced and regarded anterior segment and cataract surgeon, he was a fellow of both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American College of Surgeons. He was also a member of the Knoxville Academy of Medicine, the American Medical Association, and the Tennessee Academy of Ophthalmology. A long-standing member of the UT College of Medicine Alumni Association and Alumni Council, Dr. Williford was president from 1996 to 1998. He established this professorship in 1997.
Sadly, Dr. Williford passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2022 at the age of 85. We honor his legacy with this continuing lectureship.

Edward Chaum, MD, PhD
Dr. Chaum specializes in all aspects of the medical and surgical management of retinal diseases, with particular interests in macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and telemedicine. Dr. Chaum is the emeritus Plough Foundation Professor of Retinal diseases at the University of Tennessee Hamilton Eye Institute. His obtained his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University and both an MD and PhD from Cornell University. He completed residencies in pediatrics (Harvard) and ophthalmology (Boston University) and received his retina surgical training at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (Harvard). He is the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions throughout his academic career including National Eye Institute Research Career Award, Best Doctors in America, Research to Prevent Blindness Senior Scientist Award, R&D 100 Award, and American Telemedicine Association Innovation Award.
Dr. Chaum’s research focuses on translational tissue and biomedical engineering, telemedicine, and the application of biosensors and nanotechnology to clinical medicine and surgery. He is the author of 80 papers and 5 book chapters and a recent textbook in the fields of molecular biology, biomedical engineering, image analysis, and clinical medicine and is a co-author in 135 national clinical trials publications. He has 5 issued bioengineering patents and is a serial entrepreneur.
