Dr. Marie Gill joined The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Nursing in October 2022. She is an Associate Professor and Director of the Margaret A. Newman Center for Nursing Theory. Prior to coming to UTHSC (University of Tennessee Health Science Center), Dr. Gill was a tenured Associate Professor and PhD Program Director for the Loewenberg College of Nursing at University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee.  

Dr. Gill received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, her Master of Science in Education for Curriculum and Instruction and Leadership from the University of Memphis, and Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Memphis. She received her PhD in Nursing with a minor in public health nursing from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in December 2012. 

Over 35 years as a registered nurse, Dr. Gill has practiced nursing in telemetry stepdown, cardiovascular intensive care, and cardiac rehabilitation. She has been a nurse educator for over 27 years in nursing staff development, nurse extern program management, clinical nursing education, and patient education. 

Her research program focuses on health literacy interventions in vulnerable populations, especially among Drug Court Diversion Program clients to promote their sobriety and completion of the program. Dr. Gill has collaborated with counselors and treatment providers in the Shelby County Drug Court Program to identify clients at risk for dropping out of the program. In 2018, Dr. Gill expanded her program of research as Co-principal investigator of a grant-supported project to integrate Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and related concepts across undergraduate and graduate nursing curricula. Recently, her scholarship focus has transitioned to utilization of nursing theory and theory-guided practice. Dr. Gill’s publications and presentations are in her research program and scholarship areas of interest.  

Dr. Gill has taught courses across the undergraduate and graduate (PhD program) curricula including nursing leadership, professional nursing, nursing research and evidence-based practice, middle-range theories in nursing and health equity research, qualitative methods, philosophy of science, doctoral dissertation seminar, and theory construction and analysis. Dr. Gill received the International Daisy Award in 2018 for her excellence in teaching. 

Throughout her career in higher education, Dr. Gill has chaired and served on multiple committees within university, college, community settings, and professional organizations. Currently, she serves the community as an active member of Congregational Care and Pastoral Ministry Nursing in the Shelby County area. Dr. Gill also serves on the Southern Nursing Research Society Awards Committee.  

Dr. Gill is a member of the American Nurses Association, Tennessee Nurses Association, Southern Nursing Research Society, Sigma Theta Tau International, Beta-Theta Chapter, and the Council for Advancement of Nursing Science.
