The Association of Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE) Standards of Best Practice states, “Human simulation (HS) is a recognized methodology that involves human role players interacting with learners in a wide range of experiential learning and assessment contexts,” and "can be applied to the work of any individual portraying a human in any simulation modality." [1]    

We propose experienced Simulation Educators adapt the SP methodology while working along a continuum - incorporating Human Simulation applications such as role-player, structured role player, embedded participant, simulated patient and standardized patient to best achieve wide-ranging curricular objectives representative of numerous learner groups.[2] We will introduce The Human Simulation Continuum Model (HSCM) which provides a theoretical framework in which educators may practically contextualize their development and training process which is adaptable and reflective of specific contexts. It also offers a common language to approach training across our human simulation profession. In this session we will explore the full spectrum of roles within the Human Simulation modality, address how we frame these roles and practice using the HSCM with scenarios.
