2026 Frank M. Norfleet Forum for the Advancement of Health
Violence Prevention through a Public Safety Lens
The Frank M. Norfleet Forum for the Advancement of Health was established at UTHSC in 1979 through a designated fund within the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis. The mission of the Norfleet Forum is to focus on the improvement of the health status of the citizens who reside in Memphis/Shelby County, the State of Tennessee, the nation, and the world, through concern for effective health policies and organization. The 2026 Norfleet Forum will focus on violence prevention through evidence-based approaches.

Learning Objectives
- An increased knowledge of the ways to influence social and environmental determinants to reduce violence in both adults and children within our community
- An increased knowledge of the brain basis for violence and the impact of social and environmental factors on brain function
- Identify the resources that are available to physicians, and other healthcare professionals that could be utilized as hospital-based violence intervention programs
- Implement behavioral interventions, such as conflict resolution training, mentoring programs, street outreach, and hospital-based programs and implement environmental interventions, such as lead reduction, blight reduction and green spacing, and dietary improvements, to reduce both immediate and long-term harm
- Improved outcomes by addressing the impact of violence on the population within our community and providing resources to curtail and reduce the influence of this social determinant of health
DESIRED OUTCOME
The goal of the 2026 Norfleet Forum is to serve as a dynamic platform uniting experts and advocates dedicated to addressing the need for the prevention of violence in our community. Participants will discuss the various methods and strategies that healthcare professionals and community leaders can implement to reduce violence and address the needs of patients affected by it. The agenda for the day is designed to include insightful discussions, impactful presentations, and collaborative initiatives aimed at an increased knowledge of how violence impacts the delivery of healthcare. Together, we will explore innovative strategies to reduce the factors that increase the risk of violence and strengthen those that protect against it.

AMA Credit Designation: The University of Tennessee College of Medicine (UTCOM) designates this live activity for a maximum of 5.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Continuing Education for Non-Physicians: The UTCOM will issue Certificates of Participation to non-physicians for participating in this activity and designates it for CEUs using the national standard that 1 hour of educational instruction is awarded .1 CEU.
