Advocating for Children with Spina Bifida
This event is providing CE for nurses by UTHSC and is organized by the Mid-South Society of Pediatric nurses to address the needs of providers who care for children with special needs, specifically children with spina bifida.. This program will be used to support the providers, the patients, and families. to understand resources, give the best care, promote self-care, and advocate for these patients with chronic needs. Nurses need to learn to the specific resources such as intensives to meet needs of these youth. Providers at all levels including students have increased knowledge of how to advocate for this population, This 1 hour in person event aims to give support for health care providers including nurses, advanced providers, social work, and community to support survivors of trauma will provide 1 hours of CE.

Learning Objectives
- Identify specific healthcare needs or considerations for children with spina bifida (SB) that nurses should recognize when providing care during an emergency department (ED) visit.
- Discuss one effective communication and coordination strategy that nurses can use to advocate for a child with SB and collaborate with the child, family, and interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- identify one community or healthcare resource that can support children with SB and their families, including resources related to care coordination, communication, and access to appropriate services.

Lura Luther has been a nurse for 40 years. 35 years as a Pediatric Nurse. She worked in the inpatient hospital setting for 28 years before transferring to the last role as Spina Bifida Clinic RN Lead where she was responsible for the coordination of care for the patients in the Spina Bifida Clinic. She has participated in many Quality Projects at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital.
In 2019 she collaborated with the National Spina Bifida Association to Coorindate a Spina Bifida Patient Education Day, and also in 2019 served as a steering committee member for the planning of the first National Spina Bifida Association Clinical Care Meeting.
